The 2020 Met Gala was scheduled to take place last week, on May 4th. However, on March 16th, the event was postponed due to increasing public health concerns over the spread of Covid-19. Well, I decided that although we won’t witness gorgeous new looks, that doesn’t mean we can’t look back at some of the best outfits ever worn to the prestigious event. So, without further ado, here are some of the best Met Gala dresses and gowns of all time.
Kate Moss made her Met Gala debut in 1995. That year’s theme was “Haute Couture,” and Moss looked the part. The supermodel graced the carpet in a yellow Calvin Klein spaghetti strap gown and ’90s matte taupe lipstick. Back then, Moss was in a relationship with actor Johnny Depp, a relationship that ended after four years in 1998.
Princess Diana made her debut in the following year, 1996. Celebrating that year’s theme, “Christian Dior,” the princesses wore a navy blue slip Dior dress from John Galliano’s debut haute couture collection. Diana’s first appearance at the Met Gala in 1996 was also her last, held about a year before her unfortunate and tragic death. Diana completed her look with dazzling jewels from her jewelry box, including her famous pearl and sapphire choker.
Renée Zellweger attended the 2001 Met Gala, which celebrated the exhibition “Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years.” Zellweger’s dress channeled the Camelot era in a vintage pale yellow Oleg Cassini mini-dress. Cassini was known as the former First Lady’s “Secretary of Style” and is credited as the architect of Kennedy’s timeless look.
