Having A Strong Support System

I remember watching Grey’s Anatomy and wishing I’ll find the Christina to my Meredith. I too wanted to find “my person”, a person that understands me more than everyone and can help me through anything. However, as time went by, I understood that this wasn’t what I wanted. What I was looking for, what I was missing, was a support system.

It is so important to have a support system. We all need someone to turn to in our lows and our highs. Someone who we can feel confident to confide in, knowing that there is no criticism on their part. Someone who we know cares about us and won’t lie to us; Someone who we can trust.

You must identify correctly the people who are in your support system and select them punctiliously. Otherwise, you might find yourself trusting the wrong people and getting hurt. While the people in our support system should be encouraging, supportive, and have your best interests at heart, we can’t always tell. So, how can we identify the right people?

To identify the supportive people in your life, ask yourself some of the following questions:

  • How do you feel when you talk to that person?
  • Do they take your feeling and goals into account?
  • Do they tell you harsh truths when you need to hear them?
  • Do they celebrate your wins with you?
  • Do they encourage you to do better?

Ask yourself these questions about the people that surround you. You’ll discover that some people are more supportive than others. Don’t get me wrong; this doesn’t mean you should abandon your other connections. It just means you should put some extra effort into the ones that do support you.

Once you identify the right people for you, do your best to build these relationships. When doing so, you must remember that relationships are a two-way street. Everything you expect then to give you, you must return. Be open to feedback and advice; people can’t help you if you don’t consider what they have to say.

As the saying goes: “Life is better when you have someone to share it with”. That’s why you must identify the people in your life who support you and work on building those relationships. Finding the right people is one of the most special and rewarding things in the world. So, go out there and experience it.
