It might be a lot of people’s dream to still be together with their first love. You meet someone you think is your better half; your significant other. You might still be in high school, but you know you enjoy his or her company more than anything else. Being with them makes you feel like nothing else in the world matters as much as they do. You think that they are the most wonderful thing to ever happen to you and want to cherish that love and never let go. You might have even imagined a future with them. Maybe pictured getting married or starting a family with them.

Soon, reality hits and you realize you both have different goals in life and might need to go different places. Maybe a different college or a transfer to another city. This is when you realize that it might be time to let go of your sweetheart. You could try long-distance, but you heard that it never works. Well, maybe it does. Maybe your first love in high school is really the one and maybe trying long-distance is not the worst thing. Of course, you need to be careful of a few things. First and foremost, it is important to develop mutual trust.

You both might find lots of new people in new places, but you need to be sure that you maintain your loyalty and honesty to your partner and be sure that your partner will do the same. While you make sure you stay true to your partner, you also need to be sure that your partner trusts you and is sure that you are loyal to him or her. The second step would be to stay in touch and send small gestures to let each other know you are thinking of them. Maybe get a gift delivered on occasion, and more importantly make time to talk to each other. Don’t become overbearing but make sure you are a significant part of each other’s lives, and who knows? Maybe you will end up with your first love after all.
