The Low Down On Detoxing

Most of us grew up on a diet filled with cookies, ice cream, pizza, french fries, and all kinds of things that now make us feel rather crappy, and cause us to gain some unwanted weight. For these reasons, you might have considered going on a juice cleanse in order to detox your body, lose some weight and start your new journey to healthy eating. Well here’s the low down on juice detoxing.

When juicing, we extract the liquid out of fresh vegetables and fruits. In turn, this rids the vegetables and fruits of their antioxidants and vital fibers that are contained in the seeds and skins.  So you can already assume that you’re best off having fresh fruits and vegetables.

Since the juice does not contain the fiber, it creates a high-fructose loaded syrup,  which our bodies absorb very quickly. This triggers a response in our bodies that actually just make us even more hungry, and therefore even harder to lose weight.

Just one glass of orange juice has the same amount of sugar as a can of soda, or six teaspoons of sugar.  This doesn’t mean that drinking freshly squeezed juice isn’t a part of a healthy diet, but eating only juices for a period of time is not actually a good path to take.

Furthermore, it is very common after people deprive themselves of their favorite foods that they will reward themselves after, which can cause overeating.  When it comes to a juicing detox, most of the weight loss is water weight and will most likely be gained back once you return to the usual routine.

And it’s not like juices don’t contain calories. Although perhaps lower in calories than most sodas and chips, it’s still a highly concentrated source of calories.

Many juice diets also mean consuming no protein, which is needed for the body to function properly.  The body can lose muscle mass if it does not get enough protein, and it can also cause people to get sick.

You may be happy to see the number on the scale go down, but it’s not real weight loss.  Also, after you finish the detox, your body might enter starvation mode, and will slow down your metabolism and will cause you problems in the long term with weight loss.
